A night spent as a guest of the Achang people would probably be spent enjoying one of their favorite pastimes - singing alternating duets between the men and the women. Some of the musical instruments may include the bamboo qin (a stringed plucked instrument), the bamboo flute, the gourd-shaped sheng (a wind instrument), the sanxian (a three-stringed plucked instrument), the elephant-leg drum and the gong. Some of the young ladies may participate in the drum or monkey dances.

The Achang people prefer sour dishes. For dinner, rice is their staple food. Achangs are famous for their rice cultivation. They have been able to build irrigation systems that have transformed arid land into fertile rice paddy fields.

Achang men wear blue, white or black jackets which button down the front. Married women wear skirts and jackets with tight sleeves and wrap their heads with black or blue cloth. Unmarried women wear trousers and tie pigtails on top of their heads.
