The
Baonan people love to sing and dance. Most of
their songs have six lines and mention a flower
or use flowers as an allegory; thus, their folk
songs are called Huar, "flower songs."
Love - being in love, longing for love or the
loss of love - is another popular theme.
In the Mongolian empire, large numbers of people
were sent to China as troops and administrators.
After the collapse of the empire, these troops
gradually formed their own people groups. It
is believed the Baonan were originally Mongol
troops sent to the edge of Chinese territory
to act as guards against the fierce Tibetans.
Religious friction during the 1800s caused the
group to split into two groups. A quarrel over
water rights caused the Muslim Baonan to move
east to their present location in Gansu Province.
