The De'ang people are farmers and loggers.
They grow tea and fruit, and in some communities,
opium. They also raise goats, cows and hogs.
De'ang children are required to attend school through elementary school, but many adults
have learned to read and write. A large number of the
De'ang people attend college, teach or practice
medicine.
On moonlit nights young men are sometimes seen sharing
their love for a young woman by singing a song
of love under her window. She will invite him in
by tossing a blanket down to him, and they will chat
until dawn. If the man is interested, a few days later he will present her with a waistband as a token
of his love. In return, she will often give him earrings.
When they decide to get married, the man usually sends the
bride's family cigarettes and tea, and then sends some close
friends to propose marriage to his future wife.
