Hani People (ha-nee) 哈 尼 族
Quick facts:
Population:
1,465,587
Religion:
Polytheism
% Christian:
1.91% (28,000)
Location:
Yunnan Province

The Hani people have been in Yunnan Province for many years. Over time, as other people groups have invaded their land, they have moved to the higher, less fertile land. They are one of China's poorest people groups. Many of the Hani people are farmers, and common crops include rice, millet, cotton, peanuts, indigo and tea.

The Hani people are extremely hospitable. They will welcome strangers into their homes and serve them the best food they can offer. In addition, the Hani love to sing and dance. Popular instruments include three- and four-stringed instruments, flutes and gourd-shaped wind instruments. On any day, the Hani can be heard singing songs about their 2,500 year history. They also put on a spectacular display of singing and dancing during their October New Year celebration and the June Festival, two major holidays among the Hani.
