The Miao are subdivided into many smaller ethnic groups, and customs vary from group to group. All Miao groups, however, are known for their hospitality, and they observe many different festivals. As with most people groups, the New Year Festival is the largest celebration. Festivities include beating drums, dancing to the music of woodwind instruments, horse racing and bull-fighting.

A women's headdress is significant in the Miao culture. After a girl is born, the family will begin saving money for an elaborate silver headdress. Adorned with silver ornaments of many kinds, these headdresses can weigh up to 15 pounds. While headdresses are only worn for festivals, the women wear intricately embroidered clothing every day. Girls start learning the art of embroidery at 6 or 7 years of age.
