The
Monba people are hunters and farmers, practicing
slash-and-burn farming methods. They grow bananas,
peppers, leeks, and ginger, and also harvest
rice and corn. Monbas drink a liquor that is
sour, though not high in alcohol
content. Their liquor is distilled from corn
and rice. Homes are two or three stories high
with the lower level being used for livestock
and the upper floors used for the people.
The Monba are a hospitable people who enjoy
visitors. They have a great love for music,
singing and dancing. Most are able to play the
traditional bamboo flute, a short thick instrument
with four finger holes. At Monba weddings, the
bride's uncle is the most honored guest. According
to tradition, he finds fault in everything,
complaining the meat slices are too thick and
the drinks too cheap. Banging on the table with
his fists, he glowers angrily at everyone who
passes. He behaves in this way to test the groom's
family and observe their reactions.
