The Oroqen were a nomadic people before the
government forced them to settle in northeast
Inner Mongolia. Because of this past reliance
on hunting for food, Oroqen men and women are
excellent marksmen. Some still hunt today, but many have vocations other than hunting. The Oroqen sing and dance and have many folk songs
praising nature, love, hunting, and the struggles
of life. They play several traditional instruments, including the pengnuhua
(a type of harmonica) and wentuwen (hand drum),
which sounds like the twitter of birds or the
braying of deer.
Due to a massive migration of the Chinese people
to the northeast corner of the country, the
Oroqen are quickly losing their cultural identity.
