The
Pumi name means "white men." Many
Pumi people are farmers, growing corn along
with buckwheat and barley. Water mills grind
the products into flour. Many medicinal herbs
and over 100 varieties of edible fungi are also
grown. Besides raising traditional livestock
- horses, cattle, mules, sheep, pigs, and chickens
- the Pumi also raise bees.
On the 15th day of the first month of the Pumi
calendar, all Pumi go on a celebration camping
trip to the mountain slopes. They celebrate
around bonfires, devoting the holiday to the
'god of the kitchen.' They celebrate with wild
feasting, horse racing, shooting contests, and
wrestling.
