The Tujia people live in south central China. Most speak Chinese and are very much like the Han people. The land is rainy and forested, so farmers grow rice, corn, sweet potatoes, and wheat. The women weave and embroider, selling their crafts on the market. In spite of this, most of the people are poor.

Some Tujia practice the "wedding wail." The bride begins to wail two weeks before the wedding. Her tears are symbolic of her reluctance to leave her parents and sisters. On the eve of the wedding, the bride and her friends sit around the fire and weep together.
