The Wa people live in southern China in a subtropical climate where most are now farmers. The mountains where they live are covered with thick forests, and the land has been declared a nature reserve. The Wa have a violent background of headhunting to satisfy the demands of their gods. The people are still animists and make sacrifices to please the spirits.

To welcome guests from faraway places, the Wa hold a "buffalo tail cutting ceremony." A group of men, each holding a knife, will form a circle around a fat buffalo. The chief will then offer a few words and cut off the tail. The men then pounce on the tail and offer it to the honored guest.
