The Xibe live in villages of 100-200 households.
Until recently, Xibe homes consisted of at least
3 generations of family living together under
the same roof. Xibe women wear floor-length,
close-fitting dresses, trimmed with lace. Men
wear long robes in winter. The Xibe are farmers
and usually raise cattle and sheep. When farming
is slow, they hunt and fish.
While most Xibe are non-religious, they still
maintain practices of ancestor worship. They
make frequent offerings to the dead in order
to appease them. They also believe that their
offerings can provide a better afterlife for
their deceased relatives. Every March, they
offer fish to their ancestors, and in July they
offer melons.
