The Yi live in the mountains of Yunnan. In centuries past, they were fierce warriors with a society of castes and clans. Today they are mostly farmers who still use horse or ox-drawn plows. They are unable to produce enough food for their people, so they rely on government subsidy.

When a women marries, she goes to live with her husband's family. The Yi love music and often sing while working and will greet each other with a song. Almost all men can play a unique instrument that looks like a three-stringed fiddle about one yard long with a large sound box about a foot in diameter.
