The Yugur live in north central China. They speak three languages and value education. Both men and women wear felt hats, robes and riding boots. Women's hats are shaped liked trumpets with red tassels on top. When they reach marriageable age, women wear their hair in many small braids. After marriage, they have three thick decorated braids with one in the front and two in the back.

The Yugurs are hospitable people. It is an honor to have guests in their home, and they often offer them milk tea followed by wine and boiled mutton. When Yugur children are between 1 and 3 years old, they undergo a special hair-cutting ceremony. At this time, they are giving a special name and their hair is cut in a traditional fashion. A popular song sung at the ceremony says:
Cutting his hair with iron scissors,
The child will grow as strong as an iron rod.
Cutting his hair with gold or silver scissors,
Treasures of gold and silver will roll in.
