The
Zhuang are the largest minority group in China.
Most Zhuangs live in one-story homes like the
Han's. Some have kept the traditional two-story
home with the upper story serving as the living
quarters and the lower as the stables and storerooms.
The Zhuang people have won national fame for their
brocade. Woven with natural cotton
and dyed velour, it is excellent for quilt
covers, tablecloths, aprons and handbags.
Singing is a favorite activity for the Zhuang.
It is a part of every festival with old songs
and new songs invented on the spur of the moment.
They also use musical instruments that consist
of a bronze drum, cymbals, gongs, wind pipes,
a Chinese cornet, a Chinese flute and a stringed
instrument made of horse bones.
Urban Zhuang have intermarried with the Chinese
and adopted their language and customs.
